Monday Doodles

I went to an awesome coffee shop yesterday on Sunset called Intelligentsia with the boyfriend.... amazing coffee! We sketched and the people are still fresh in my head, I noticed traces of them creeping up in my sketches this morning.

The Great Horned Owl

I've been wanting to design an owl for quite some time now, and finally got around to it. They're the most mysterious and interesting birds, to me. There's something about them that demands respect... I think it's their posture and elegance. Turns out that the owl is the symbol of wisdom (in Greek mythology)... they're pretty amazing!

Sneak Peaks?

I've been trying to learn to play the ukulele this past summer, my boyfriend Ed has been teaching me, he gave me his old ukulele because he got a brand-spanking new one for his birthday a way back (by yours truly) I learned how to play "Postcards from Italy" by Beirut and a little part of "Breakdown" by Jack Johnson. Needless to say I need practice... a lot of it! Here's a sketch of a piece I'm working on inspired by my ukulele endeavors!

These sketches are way crude but I wanted to design a milk-man. I thought it would be a fun concept if a milk-man was selling CHOCOLATE milk to little kids on the side... without their mom's knowing... taking allowances and serving up cavities one block at a time.

Finito!

Finally done with the watermelon patch painting. It is raining today and I am absolutely loving it. I feel so nostalgic... I can hear the raindrops outside my window, I have a hot cup of tea resting on my desk, and I'm watching my favorite movie, Pride and Prejudice (the one directed by Joe Wright) as I work. Hope everyone's enjoying the rainy Tuesday!

Fascination with Shape

I have always been captivated with how certain shapes could give so much insight into who a character is. How the tiniest line can differentiate one character from another one. With these I put down the basic head shapes first and I'm always so delighted to find that once the details in the faces go in, a character emerges that I could have never thought of or visualized in my head.

Watermelon Patch Background

Now the background minus the characters... I'm totally winging this process, but I'm sure it'll come together in the end. This was completely done with pencil with a few tweeks in photoshop... it was great getting graphite all over my hands for a change.
